Pappé and the Neo Nazis

Ilan Pappé, Professor of History at the University of Exeter, has given an in depth interview to the National Zeitung.

The National Zeitung is the paper of Neo Nazi party, the Deutsche Volksunion.

I do not know whether Pappé realised that he was giving an interview to the newspaper of the German fascists. If he did, then perhaps he has joined the ranks of Gilad Atzmon and Oren Ben Dor.

(BBC 3) When Commies Luv Nazis.

Ilan is an Israeli “but not hung up about it!!!”, and Heinrich is a German skinhead with daring views about the past and future.

In this episode they get to know one another, discuss the legacies of Herr Ribbentrop and Comrade Molotov, and ask what we can learn from them.

(Do you know nothing but have an opinion you’d like to share? Is Israel a country? Is it not much better than Poland was? Tell us your thought)

Johann Hari also makes good use of Pappe’s work in his recent article, ‘Israel is suppressing a secret it must face’:

‘When it became clear these Palestinians would not welcome becoming a minority in somebody else’s country, darker plans were drawn up. Israel’s first Prime Minister, David Ben-Gurion, wrote in 1937: “The Arabs will have to go, but one needs an opportune moment for making it happen, such as a war.”

So, for when the moment arrived, he helped draw up Plan Dalit. It was – as Israeli historian Ilan Pappe puts it – “a detailed description of the methods to be used to forcibly evict the people: large-scale intimidation; and laying siege to and bombarding population centres”. In 1948, before the Arab armies invaded, this began to be implemented: some 800,000 people were ethnically cleansed, and Israel was built on the ruins. The people who ask angrily why the Palestinians keep longing for their old land should imagine an English version of this story. How would we react if the 30m stateless, persecuted Kurds in the world sent armies and settlers into this country to seize everything in England below Leeds, and swiftly established a free Kurdistan from which we were expelled? Wouldn’t we long forever for our children to return to Cornwall and Devon and London? Would it take us only 40 years to compromise and offer to settle for just 22 per cent of what we had?’

well, let’s hope that Prof. Pappe updates his web site to reflect his new interview by neo-Nazis

remembering that he’s not exactly shy about his opinions, here’s a selection of previous interviews, http://www.ilanpappe.org/interviews.html

ahh, he has put out a statement:

“Ilan’s statement on the interview with National Zeitung

Dear Friends,

As a point of clarification, it came to my notice that among the
many interviews I gave while being in Germany one of them was
copied to the National Zeitung. Had I known that I would appear
in this newspaper, I would have not agreed to do that. I do not
blame that paper, but myself from not inquiring to whom I am
giving press conferences and interviews. I would like to stress
that my ideology and moral stance are in total contradiction to
what this newspaper represent and the unfortunate appearance in
it has nothing to associate myself or the cause of Palestine with
the paper and the political party behind it.

Yours faithfully,

Professor Ilan Pappe
Chair
Department of History
University of Exeter
UK”

Could a German speaker give us a synopsis of the article?

Pappe seems to be best known for cataloguing Israeli massacres since 1948, many of the reports seemingly of dubious provenance or stretching the definition, or fiction, as in the Jenin massacre). South African Intelligence Minister — and struggle warrior — Ronnie Kasrils, who is Jewish, cites Pappe’s numbers in an article expressing support for the Palestinians and undying enmity towards Israel and the “Zionists”. I don’t think he would be happy to know that his hero has been chatting to the Nazis.

Hari is transparently a shill. He writes to please his audience and editors and doesn’t care much for facts.

Will he sue to have this comment taken down?

In the circumstances, I am utterly amazed by it.

The article has a side piece about how the German Templars were treated by the British during the Mandate period. It is very interesting that the article fails to point out that the Templars supported the Nazis during World War II.
