Maybe they should have thrown in Ted Kennedy too

Consider: the National Republican Congressional Committee ran this scare ad (invoking both Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama) in an effort to defeat Democrat Don Cazayoux in a special election for Congress in Louisiana’s Sixth District. The seat had been held by a Republican for the 33 previous years.

Nevertheless Cazayoux won the election with 49 percent of the vote to his opponent’s 46 percent. This may not be a good year for the GOP.

It seems the fortunes of the Democrats and New Labour are– for understandable reasons– heading in opposite directions.

Ambassador Joe Wilson, the Hero-Martyr of American Liberals, in today’s News-Observer:

“Judgment and leadership in foreign policy are not intuitive. They are learned through experience. Obama’s long and close relationship with the anti-American hate-monger Wright, his inattention to his responsibilities in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and his careless approach to Iraq all suggest that he would benefit from more experience. We should ask whether we want those lessons to be learned in the White House.”

This is shocking.

He’s not a hero/martyr of mine.

So why do you think the NRCC attack ad didn’t work against Don Cazayoux? Perhaps they should have thrown in Jeremiah Wright, Louis Farrakhan and Bill Ayers too. Wimps.

I would’nt read too much into this. The Democrats are going to have serious problems winning the whitehouse in November, with either Obama or Hilary at the helm.

I would not be surprised if within two years we have a McCain presidency and a Cameron premiership.

Yes. But don’t be too shocked. Take a closer look at Joe. His wife was a spy. To me, that says she was a pretty tough and take charge woman who likely wears the pants in that marriage. Joe obviously likes that type of woman. That is what Hilary comes across as, so that is what Joe would endorse. Besides, his wife wouldn’t let him endorse anyone but Hilary! ;)

“So why do you think the NRCC attack ad didn’t work against Don Cazayoux?”
I don’t have the faintest idea, but I’ll hazzard some guesses.
1. The ad was barely run?
2. Someone with a name like “Cazayoux” has some formidable Cajun Cred?
3. His opponent was weak?
4. The issue didn’t have time to settle and play out?

What’s shocking about wanting someone with experience in the White House, or thinking that that person is Clinton?

As for comments suggesting that a man who thinks Clinton is better must be someone who doesn’t wear the pants in his marriage…that person might consider reading the comments on sexism a couple of posts down. Thinking a person of whatever gender might be a good leader is not tantamount to emasculation, or only if you have a very shaky grasp of your own identity, sexual or otherwise.

Given that Peolsi is the Dems leader in the House, and Obama the all-but inevitable Presidential candidate, they are (with Reid) the defacto party leadership, so what is in any way remarkable about this ad ? Presumably the Dems ran ads linking Jenkins to Bush ? So what ? And as for why the ad didn’t “work” - only a fool would read much into the correlation of a particular ad and an election result, especially such a bland and unremarkable ad as this.

As in the UK, a special/bye-election defeat is not a reliable predictor of future national election outcomes. But one clear difference is that this will be a competitive election in November; could anybody seriously suggest that the same would be true if Brown had to face Cameron this fall ?

What is remarkable about this election cycle is that the GOP have a realistic chance of winning the White House - and that as in 2000, the Dems seem to have found a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of what should be inevitable victory.

“Barack Obama will require you to work. He is going to demand that you shed your cynicism. That you put down your divisions. That you come out of your isolation, that you move out of your comfort zones. That you push yourselves to be better. And that you engage. Barack will never allow you to go back to your lives as usual, uninvolved, uninformed.”

Michelle Obama, in a strident, hectoring speech typical of her husband’s cult of personality.

Now THAT’s a “scare ad.”

And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you–ask what you can do for your country.

My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.

Finally, whether you are citizens of America or citizens of the world, ask of us here the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you. With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God’s work must truly be our own.”

Thats a scare Ad I guess, Mesquito.

Do you think McCain has a problem of understanding when he talks about the economy or health care?

mesquito

“Do you think McCain has a problem of understanding when he talks about the economy or health care?”

Is that not obvious? McCain also has a problem of understanding re: immigration, “climate change”, freedom of political expression, and a host of other issues.

Oddly, Hillary is now more likely to be drinking beer and shots in a bar, while her campaign staff push their last remaining argument (she cannot win the delegate count) that uneducated white people will not vote for a black man.

Stateside here. Let me just say that Obama will not beat John McCain. Patriotism and the Presidency go hand-in-hand, more so in the United states where nationalism is still celebrated by the mainstream despite the best efforts of the transnationalists. The roots of Obama’s political career lead right back to some of the worst of anti-Americanism. Add the laundry list of his “down on America” wife, lapel pin, lack of hand-over-heart during the national anthem and you get the picture. You may think it’s all trivial and you may think that it’s jingoism at its worst but it won’t change the facts on the ground. Obama can’t win. I’ll be here come election time to gloat or blush.

DaveW
  5 May 2008, 6:58 am

AmericanMike - you sound like the kind of GOPers (and even some Libertarians) who go out to vote for Obama with the idea that it helps Mccain. If you ignore the consequences of being wrong, that is all fine and dandy - but it is playing with fire.

I have a soft spot for Hillary, and she would have had my support against 2-buck Huck or Romney. But any libertarian or conservative rooting for Obama needs to learn some risk anaysis. Hillary is a reasonably known quantity, and American did well under Bill - though there was much not to like about his presidency; in short, she’s a centrist and a pragmatist; she will doubtless do things that we don’t like, but we’ll be OK. OTOH, Obama is a zealot, who consistently refuses to reveal his platform beyond grade school-level sloganizing; we have no real idea how he would govern, but his senate voting record gives some scary clues.

In business (or when investing for your retirement) you would never make a bet with such a catostrophic downside; complacency such as yours can easily lead to such bad bets. Even if I accepted your analysis (which I don’t, fully), any conservative or libertarian who backs Obama against Clinton in the hope of a better chance for McCain is engaging in what Taleb calls “picking up pennies in front of a steamroller”.

DaveW
  5 May 2008, 7:27 am

I see there is speculation that Mccain may pick Bobby Jindal as his running mate. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/05/opinion/05kristol.html?ref=opinion

That could actually give me some enthusiasm for the GOP ticket, and trump my soft spot for Hillary.

Toady
  5 May 2008, 2:13 pm

Bobby Jindal is way too young and was just elected governor of Louisiana. If the Republicans are interested in him, they’d do better to wait until his term is finished and he gets some more experience to talk about.

mesquito
  5 May 2008, 2:23 pm

Toady: I agree. He was just elected and it would seem kind of weaselly for him to accept. I imagine that he will someday be on the ticket, probably at the top.
Meantime, his youth would be an unfortunate contrast with McCain’s lack of same. Jindal is very young, and looks like he’s about 26.

Mephisto
  5 May 2008, 3:30 pm

Jindal supports teaching Intelligent Design in schools.

That alone ought to disqualify him from being taken seriously as a rational human being, let alone a prospective vice-presidential candidate.

DaveW
  5 May 2008, 3:43 pm

Mmm, I hadn’t heard that, but a quick search shows that you’re right. What a shame - everything else I’d read about him was so sane.

Careless
  5 May 2008, 4:52 pm

Or maybe a lot fewer voters are as scared by Pelosi and Obama as Republican strategists want to believe.

Well, Pelosi is still not well enough known to be effective (which is embarrassing) and Obama’s big problems are personal, not policy-related (at this point, which is also embarassing)

So, yes, while I won’t guess what the Republican strategists want to believe, I’d say that it’s an ineffective association.

David All
  5 May 2008, 4:53 pm

Having someone who believes in whatever form of Creationism, i.e. Intelligent Design, that the so-called Christian Right is promoting would probably be mandatory for McCain’s VP choice since he needs to appease his party’s right wing.

Note: Even if McCain gets elected, and that’s by no means assured even against Obama, given McCain’s age and Obama’s relative youth, the Democrats will probably pick up plenty of seats in both the House and Senate. (the registration of new voters over last year has favored Democrats by about 3 to 1 margin) McCain will face a Congress that is solidly Democratic.

David All
  5 May 2008, 6:01 pm

2nd Note: Losing a seat the Republicans have held in a southern state for 33 years is not good, however you spin it. In the previous special election in Illinois a few months ago to fill the seat formely held by the former Republican Speaker of the House, Dennis Hastert, an anti-war Democrat beat a pro-war Republican in what should have been a safe Republican district or constiuency.

Toady
  5 May 2008, 7:29 pm

the Democrats will probably pick up plenty of seats in both the House and Senate

Don’t bet on it. Approval ratings for the current Democratic Congresss are lower than Bush’s.

David All
  5 May 2008, 11:29 pm

I would bet on it given the number of incumbent Republican senators who are up for re-election greatly outnumber the Democratic ones. About 12 Republican seats are considered at risk to be taken by democrats while only one democratic seat is considered a likely pick up by republicans.

The reason the Congress, as a whole, has lower approval ratings then Bush is because the Congressional Republicans have blocked demands by Democrats for troop withdrawls from Iraq among othe matters.

David All
  6 May 2008, 12:14 am

Apparently some people have not yet heard the approved wisdom that Obama has been destroyed by Rev. Wright. See CBS/New York Times Poll: Support for Obama Rebounds at http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/05/04/opinion/polls/main4069259.shtml
However the USA Today/Gallup Poll says that “Obama damaged by Wright flap”. See http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080505/pl_nm/usa_politics_democrats_poll_dc for details.
Only thing for sure is that it is a long time till November and the only poll that counts, i.e. Election Day.
Note CBS poll says that 81% of Americans say that the USA is on the wrong track.

CBS poll says that 81% of Americans say that the USA is on the wrong track.

Not again.

As an American citizen, I’ve heard that all my life. I’ll wager Americans have been saying that since the ink dried on the Constitution.

The reason the Congress, as a whole, has lower approval ratings then Bush is because the Congressional Republicans have blocked demands by Democrats for troop withdrawls from Iraq among othe matters.

Mostly to do with the ‘other matters’ than with troop withdrawals.
