Madeebs not scary

Following urging from US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who described the situation as “embarrassing”, the US has finally removed Nelson Mandela and the ANC from its “terror blacklist”.

As reported at (South African) News24.com, Democratic House foreign affairs chairperson Howard Berman said:

“This long-overdue bill is the direct result of a stunning and, frankly, embarrassing story for the United States.

“Despite recognising two decades ago that America’s place was on the side of those oppressed by apartheid, Congress has never resolved the inconsistency in our immigration code that treats many of those who actively opposed apartheid in South Africa as terrorists and criminals.”

The vote passed unanimously. Phew!

In related news, London will be hosting Madiba shortly as he heads to the UK for his 90th birthday bash, a free concert in Hyde Park!

Seriously… do you believe your own bullshit?

You don’t really oppose apartheid, you “just changed” your mind in South Africa.

Disheartening. You think after the events of 2001– which the above commenter “Flanker” referred to as “Bush’s Reichstag” — the U.S. government would have reviewed these lists and made them more rational. Blind Egyptian clerics claim polical asylum and attempt mass murder, while the President of a friendly country remains on the list even after his historic State visit.

Who’s this chap Madiba who’s the same age as Nelson Mandela?

Things are looking up for MEK as well, as it’s just been declared “non-terrorist” in the UK.

“actively opposed apartheid” meant a lot of things - including blowing up shopping centers as well as many other legitimate and non-violent activities.

The world has moved on, and a long enough time has passed sincle the ANC had a “military wing”, that it’s right make this change. But lets not rewrite history in the process - the ANC’s links to terrorism were at least comparable with those of Sinn Fein.
