I’d say “Ta’alat Blaumilch” was Kishon’s best film, but Hashoter Azoulay is definitely his most loved. It has certain “Burekas” elements to it, if you know what that means in Israeli film terms. Hashoter Azoulay is actually a character from Taalat Blaumilch. The late great Shayke Ofir was so wonderful that Kishon built a whole film around the character.

I wasn’t aware it was a flop. Are you sure? It’s certainly lasted well for a flop. You can usually see it on TV around Independence Day time.

Not a good analogy. Piercing various body parts for reasons that are purely cosmetic is a form of self-mutilation and one that often results in all sorts of nasty infections and prevents the spread/incubation of none. Male circumcission, on the other hand, does figure in as a reduced risk of a number of diseases.

But you are right about it being contraversial because it is associated with Jews. Possibly, if it was better known that Muslims also practice male circumcission, but on young adolescent males instead of infants, condeming it would lose a lot of its cachet.

I don’t know the particulars of the case you cite, but here in Canada, when the subject is ritual slaughter, kashruth and halal get equally bad press. But while I have heard plenty of bitching about Jewish ritual circumcission of males, the only comment I have ever heard about Muslim ritual circumcission of males was from a Turkish-born co-worker who was talking about her Turkish-born husband’s painful experience, and both are in their mid-30s.
