Nader and Cockburn vs. Obama
As he has in the past, blogger Adam Holland provides a useful reminder of what some figures on the anti-Israel Left think of Barack Obama and his support for Israel.
Third-party candidate Ralph Nader accuses Obama of “antisemitism against the Arab peoples.” (He invokes the old “Arabs are semites too” wheeze.)
Longtime Israel-basher, Counterpunch editor and Nation magazine columnist Alexander Cockburn has of course come out against Obama too, largely as a result of the candidate’s friendly attitude to Israel.
Although his entire Nation piece isn’t available for free on online, Cockburn writes that Obama “has groveled before the Israel lobby…”
He adds:
I suggest you go to the website of the Nader-Gonzalez campaign and read its platform, particularly on popular participation and initiative. Or read the portions of Libertarian Bob Barr’s platform on foreign policy and constitutional rights. Cynthia McKinney is now making nutty claims about 5,000 post-Katrina executions; otherwise I’d include her. Do you really want to be on the same side as Alan Dershowitz, Colin Powell and Christopher Hitchens?
As many disagreements as I’ve had with them over the years– and considering the alternatives of, on the one hand, being on the side of Nader and Cockburn or, on the other hand, being on the side of Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh, to name just a few– I think I can handle that for now.

I so confused on Obama’s stance on Israel. We have his “univided Jerusalem” speech – immediately recanted. We have Biden stating that there is no greater supporter of Israel than him.
I know of a tape held by LA Times of an anti-Israel bash attended by Obama with Khalidi http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=ZDFkMGE2MmM1M2Q5MmY0ZmExMzUxMWRhZGJmMTAyOGY=
So, which is the REAL Obama? Confused!

Mesquito’s remark about Rashid Khalidi refers to the latest straw Obamabashers are grasping at. The existence of a tape supposedly showing Obama lavishing praised on Khalidi a professor at the University of Chicago who was heading to New York to head up Columbia University’s Middle East Studies. Since this tape is supposedly being supressed by the Los Angeles Times this has gotten the Right-Wing into full foaming at the mouth rants about the Liberal Media etec. Go to http://littlegreenfootballs.com to see the Obama bashers once again ranting and raving. Thought they would have learned from last Friday’s fiasco about the Big Bad Black Man Obama supporter attacking the White Woman McCain backer fiasco, but no nothing can deter the right wing from making fools of themsevles.
Note to Maven, John P etec. Drop the Obama birth certificate story for the time being at least. This is the Smear you are going to concentrate on until further notice.

I couldn’t give a whit about any videotape, David All. Obama’s longstanding friendship with Khalidi is well-documented, and I don’t see how a tape adds or subtracts from that in any way.
Meanwhile, here’s some fun for Gene and tim:

“I wonder if commenters can stick to the post at hand and not to unrelated unsubstantiated rumors about candidates.”
I’ll try gene, but I’m still trying to get my admittedly feeble mind around the Limbaugh-Cockburn Axis.
27 October 2008, 10:13 pm
David, a liar foaming at the mouth like many Obama groupies before him – and without even realising what a fool he is making of itself – tries to wriggle out of the birth certificate story by calling it a ’smear’. No, little groupie: a smear is a lie. This story is true. Feel free to look up the difference between ‘truth’ and ‘lie’ (I do realise this is a difficult concept for Obama groupies, since the Messiah himself cannot tell which is which).
There is no ‘real’ Obama. Like Blair, another snake-oil salesman, he is whatever people want to hear. And like Blair, he will be a disaster precisely because he doesn’t stand for anything: he is a suit for sale.

Gene,
Hang on, am I reading this correct?
so Obama has Nader, Cockburn, etc against him, most of the American right, including a lot of radio talk show hosts?
sounds like he’s doing something right?
27 October 2008, 10:35 pm
What is it about the postings at LGF that’s ‘right wing’?
27 October 2008, 10:38 pm
not forgetting that Obama has a fair few neo-Nazis against him too:
“Two men have appeared in a US court accused of making threats to kill Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, federal agents say.
They were also charged with possessing an unregistered firearm and conspiracy to steal from a licensed gun dealer.
The pair were named as Daniel Cowart, 20, and Paul Schlesselman, 18.
Court papers allege that the neo-Nazi skinheads planned to assassinate Mr Obama in a murder spree targeting more than 100 black people.”

Gene, the Khalidi tape IS on topic since the subject is about the claims against Obama that he is too pro-Israel and pro-Jewish. LA Times don’t deny that the get together was a celebration for Khalidi – who has anti-Israel and anti-Jewish sympathies. So, Nader says Obama is Pro-Israel and his association with Khalidi may be evidence to the contrary.
Surely its relevant to your post.
I can’t reconcile the ethic of HP and your attempts to suppress discussions you don’t like.

Hitchens on Palin
With Palin, however, the contempt for science may be something a little more sinister than the bluff, empty-headed plain-man’s philistinism of McCain.
The fruit fly thing in Paris was about agriculture, olives in that particular case I think. Hitchens doesn’t get it, they don’t grow much fruit in Alaska, mush less olives and if the do have fruit flies they hunt them down by helicopter and NRA approved earmark subsidies assault rifles.
“I kid you not.”

Cockburn did the red-brown crossover years ago.
Nader was a good environmentalist campaigner, but he also got Bush elected in 2000 by splitting the vote.
So we’ve got one crypto-Nazi, and a busted-flush, coming out against Obama. I bet he’s shaking with fear.

Thought they would have learned from last Friday’s fiasco about the Big Bad Black Man Obama supporter attacking the White Woman McCain
Little Green Footballs *never* actually believed the woman’s story, actually.
And she was a Paulian too.

Interesting that Cockburn, the Last Stalinist, is buddy-buddy with with some of the far right-wing types like Bob Barr. I am more worried about who Cockburn would support then who he opposses. Would take the latter as a reasuring sign of that candidate’s sanity.
The Obama bashers in their assault over this supposed suppressed video tape sound like Joe McCarthy on meth.
Tim: Thanks for the link to Hitchens article on Palin. It was guite good on McCain and Palin’s contempt for science as well as Palin’s nuttiness.

” (He invokes the old “Arabs are semites too” wheeze.)”
Be fascinated to see your arguments showing Arabs ARENT semites.
Or are you arguing that anti-Arab racism is OK ?. Here on Harry’s Place
Surely not

Its astonishing how extreme anti-Arab and Muslim feeling is in the US and how complete the zionists stranglehold on US ME policy is, that simply having dinner with an evil barely human creature known as a “Palestinian” is considered anti-Israel
Surely the fact that Arabs are allowed to vote at all in US elections is blatant anti-semitism (I mean the bad anti-jewish type not the good anti-Arab type)

What fun the Palin/McCain team could have had with Newton, “study falling apples, I’m not kidding you”.
28 October 2008, 2:29 am
lasse: That is quite good. Imagine what McCain/Palin would have made of Fleming who discovered Penicillian through the study of bread mold.
Note: Should note that the original demagouge on govt. spending for scientific research was Senator William Proxmire, a liberal Democrat from Wisconsin. Back in the 1970s, Sen. Proxmire had a monthly Golden Fleece Award for what he considered to be the dumbest expenditure of money by the Federal Govt. This started out well, but the need to find a new subject every month that could be made into headlines led Proxmire over several years to concentrate on attacking scientific research projects that could be easily ridiculed. For several years Proxmire went his merry way wrecking various research projects until one scientist who has lost his research grant due to Proxmire’s attacks sued him for libel. I believe they settled out of court with Proxmire paying the scientist a good deal of money. After that Proxmire’s attacks on govt. funding of research projects came to an end.

Yes Newton, Pasteur, Fleming all these dead white men would vote for Herr Doktor Proffessor Obama whom I doubt can solve an O-Level calculus problem.

I suspect that he simply means that, once you’ve been on the same side as Saddam Hussein and Mullar Omar, second best will no longer do.

This reminds me of the following quote:
“I can win an argument on any topic, against any opponent. People know this, and steer clear of me at parties. Often, as a sign of their great respect, they don’t even invite me.”

I don’t like Nader, but he’s better than Obama. He cares, at least some of the time, about a fair deal for the American consumer, though he has no idea about how to attain it.
Obama, like all radicals, just cares about power for him and his mates and extending state control into every nook and cranny of autonomous civil society.
3 November 2008, 6:00 pm
I’m encouraging my rad lefty friends to vote for Nader or McKinney. If it worked for Bush, maybe it will work for McCain…

Obama? Republican! Alexander Cockburn: Obama, the first-rate Republican
I felt strangely reassured of an Obama presidency after reading Cockburn’s attacks on him.
